One of the reasons we got excited about EV charging is we experienced it firsthand, repeatedly. In fact, my kids grumble on car rides because “dad is pulling over to explore another EV charger”.
More often than not they simply didn’t work. And not for just one reason but many reasons up and down the chain of infrastructure. The breaker was blown, no power, power, but no screen, sun damaged, power and screen but no Wi-Fi, can’t use it.
Consumer Reports recently did a survey of 1,200 people inquiring about their EV charging experiences. They state on average about 60% of the time they get reliable charging. There’s a reason they call it “range anxiety”! Imagine driving your gas-powered car, getting low on fumes and pulling into a gas station and you had this experience. Also, the challenge for charging is when it’s down it’s often down for weeks and costs over $1000 just to have someone take a look.
Having spent most of my career in tech 99.99% uptime is the goal. You wouldn’t be successful as a company in the long run with 60% uptime.
